Abstract:
This doctoral dissertation examined the application of the Transtheoretical model of behavior change to the welfare to work transition with public housing residents. Two hundred women living in public housing completed a demographic survey, stage of change measure, and a decisional balance measure to determine whether a respondent's stage of change and decisional balance scores would demonstrate predicted patterns from previous literature on the welfare to work transition and the transtheoretical model. In addition, a subsample of women participated in focus groups by stage of change to determine whether there were differences in perception regarding the welfare system and/or the concept of self-sufficiency. There was support from quantitative analysis that the stages of change score correlated with factors salient in the welfare to work process and also demonstrated similar patterns with other change processes studied using the Transtheoretical model. Qualitative analysis also supported the assertion that women did perceive the welfare to work process differently dependent upon their identified stage of change. These findings have implications for policy development, social work education and social work practice with women in the welfare to work transition. [AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED]
